12-16 - SPIN'S 20 BEST PHOTOS OF 2010
The photo shoot for the Green Day frontman's cover of SPIN's "Under the Influence" issue, in which he interviewed his idol, Replacements rocker Paul Westerberg, transformed into an impromptu concert.

The smash-hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT presents "American Idiot Gives Back", a day of special performances on Thursday, December 16 to benefit Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. Free and open to the general public, the show's stars John Gallagher Jr., Stark Sands and Michael Esper will play a different selection of their Green Day favorites, Holiday classics and songs from AMERICAN IDIOT at each NYC location.

12-14 - JEANNE DE WAAL JOINS AMERICAN IDIOT CAST
Jeanna de Waal will replace original cast member Mary Faber as Heather in the Broadway production of American Idiot, at the St. James Theatre, beginning with tonight's performance, December 14. Faber, who will soon appear as Smitty in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, played her final performance on Sunday, December 12.
The musical features a score by Green Day. It is directed by Michael Mayer, who wrote the book with the band's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, and features choreography by Steven Hoggett. It follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration.
The principal cast also includes Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony Award Nominee Stark Sands, Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Christina Sajous. As previously reported, Armstrong will play a limited engagement as St. Jimmy, beginning January 1.
Waal is making her Broadway debut. She recently appeared in the West End production of We Will Rock You.

11-29 - BILLIE JOE CATCHES 'NEXT TO NORMAL'
You'll have to excuse audience members at the Ahmanson Theatre on Sunday night for doing a double-take at the guests in seats K19 and 20. After all, the musical "Next to Normal," about a clinically depressed, bipolar woman (played by Tony Award-winner Alice Ripley) and her family, is probably the last place people would expect to see the lead vocalist for the rock band Green Day.
But sure enough, there was Billie Joe Armstrong, sans mascara, with his wife, Adrienne, in the center orchestra section for opening night of the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical.
The connection? "Next to Normal" composer and co-orchestrator Tom Kitt also served as music supervisor for Green Day's Broadway musical "American Idiot."
A few rows up from Armstrong sat the always-dapper Pierce Brosnan and wife Keely Shaye Smith, seeing the musical for the first time. His "Mamma Mia!" costar Amanda Seyfried also was in attendance.
The mysteries surrounding "I'm Still Here," the documentary film directed by Casey Affleck that tracks Joaquin Phoenix's supposed breakdown, appear to have been solved. In an interview with the New York Times, Affleck admitted that the entire project was not actually a legitimate documentary (which followed Phoenix's attempts to start a rap career, do a bunch of drugs and generally fall apart) but rather a massive piece of performance art conceived by Phoenix. Even Phoenix's legendary interview on "The Late Show with David Letterman" was part of the act. Knowing that it's mostly for show certainly makes "I'm Still Here" better and lets everybody stop worrying about Phoenix and his mental health.
Hoaxes in the music world are a dime a dozen, but this particular project recalls the strange tale of the Network, the mysterious New Wave band that started to make noise in 2003 in the run-up to their debut album Money Money 2020. Their brand of twitchy New Wave didn't take the world by storm, though they did get an awful lot of ink because they started a feud with Green Day (frontman Billie Joe Armstrong put out their album on his label) while also fending off rumors that they were made up of the members of Green Day.
"I just wanted to talk about the rumors and the bulls--- that has been going on lately," Armstrong wrote in a statement in the summer of 2003. "All I gotta say is f-- the Network. These guys are totally spreading rumors. I try to do those guys a favor by bringing them to this country and putting out their record and this is how I get repaid, by talking s--- about my band. Unfortunately there is a contract and I have to put out their record. The only thing I can say is f--- you, Network. Bring it on."
The identities of the members of the Network remained closely guarded. They always wore masks and were never photographed very cleanly, and they went by odd pseudonyms like Fink and the Snoo. Meanwhile, Green Day band seemed really intent on selling the idea that they were not in fact the Network, though eventually there was too much evidence against it (namely that their names showed up in the writing credits for the songs on Money Money 2020). But that didn't stop Green Day from really trying to sell the drama, even going as far as having their publicist issue statements about how badly the Network were ruining the group's lives. They never stretched it as far as Phoenix did, but they still managed to keep people talking for a while.
The amount of OMGS and OMGZ exploded out of Green Day land last night as the boys upped and announced two things: that they were recording a live album (Billie Joe had tweeted that it was possible a few days ago) and then went on to play a “new” song, which isn’t actually new, but it’s only been heard once by the denizens of Green Day land, at a soundcheck earlier this tour.
That song? “Cigarettes and Valentines,” a tune that was supposed to headline an album just after Warning and before American Idiot of the same name. The album never materialized… the band says that the masters to the songs were stolen while some rumors swirled that they also just didn’t feel the album and decided to not release it. Whatever the reason for the album never materializing, I don’t know, but I’m just happy that they launched the song onto everyone last night in Englewood, Colorado, thereby forcing me to get off the Green Day Community and actually going to sleep for fear of reading one more OMGZ, haha.
The xGeneralxS and her sis headed off to the show this weekend, and as usual, captured the song for all of us hardcore, diehard fans.
